Question:

Potty Training Tips for Boys

I started potty training my son who will be 3 next month. He has no interest in it and won't tell me when he has to go. I have just been sitting him on the potty every few hours and he will go, but I could use any tips anyone has. I did try buying him cool undies but he doesn't want to wear them and I don't want to force him. The problem is he starts school in a couple months and he is supposed to be trained. This is frustrating!

  1. My son is younger just turned two but he will go to the potty if we sit him on it. So I started bribing him with stickers and cheap "special" toys and candy (GASP) But it worked and I just kept asking him if he had to go potty and he would say yes if he had to go. No treats if he didn't go and I would try every hour even if he said he didn't have to go. You know they get distracted and such.  My son wasn't in to his under wear either until I let him pick them out. He picked Thomas The Train Engine which is his fave. He was completely potty trained in 2 weeks. So my advice is if you have to have him potty trained in a month then you have to get him interested and motivated. I suggest a prize after he goes and be very consistent. Set a timer and take him to the potty every 30 minutes at first. Do not punish him if he doesn't go or if he has an accident and no more diapers. Get rid of them. He won't want to be wet very long.

  2. Just be firm. My oldest son was almost 4 when he finally got potty trained. My daughter, his older sister, was 2 1/2. Every kid is different. Tell him that if he wants to go to school, he has to wear underwear, not a diaper. Try getting cheerios and telling him to aim at them. You might need a stool, b/c he's probably too short to stand. Anyways, we also got a bucket of cheep toys, like rubber balls and things like that. When our son went in the potty, he got to pick a toy. good luck.

  3. patience...I'm training my 1 yr old he is so excited its hard but you just have to be patient.

  4. My son worn diapers till he was 4 years old.  We told him that he'll be going to school soon and that he has to stop wearing diapers. We bring him to pee every 2 to 3 hours to train him.  We explained to him that this is how it feels when you feel like peeing and you must tell the adults... he later knows when to tell.

About the undies, he refused to wear at first.  Then we had to tell him that everyone in school will be wearing undies.  If he doesn't wear, the boys and girls will see his 'wee-wee' hanging out of his pants and that is such a big shame. We even told him that ants likes to bite 'wee-wee' too if he doesn't wear undies... He got a little worried about the 'ant' part and agree to wear undies to protect his 'wee-wee'.

  5. Tell him what bog boy undies are. Be sure to use the words, 'big boy'. All little boys love to be a big boy. Then tell him that he needs to tell when he has to go potty. Tell him that he can tell you, his mom, or his teacher if he has to go potty.
