Preconceptions about people who can adopt?!?

I have always wanted to adopt..but imagine that the only people who are allowed to adopt are 2 parent families, well off, and have a very well paid job.

Would i be correct in this, or would a single mum who works part time, studies full time and not very well off still be able to adopt?

All adoption agencies/ countries have differnt rules and regulations for adoption. We are with an adoption agency that places both foster and adoptive children from CPS. How it works is CPS gives our agency a list of children needing homes and the agency provides CPS with families willing to adopt/foster then CPS and our agency work together to find a family that can meet the needs of a child ready for adoption. Guidelines for a CPS adoption are usually more relaxed. They usually don't care if your single although they will ask and if you're married you have to provide them with a copy of your marriage lisense.They do want to know everything about you and will have you answer very personal questions and interview friends and family to help ensure the safety and well-being of a child in your home. It of course is still a long process you have to do about 8 weeks of training, have a phycial, provide financial information that you can adequately care for a child, criminal backgroundcheck etc. In most cases a CPS adoption will cost little or no out-of-pocket. And again in most cases that child will have what is called adoption subsdity which is a paycheck from the state to aide in the support of the child until 18 even though you would be the legal guardian of the child; also in most states when completing a CPS adoption..until the age of 18 you can choose weather or not to keep your adopted child on free state health and dental insurance.

Claire, single people can adopt, and single people do adopt of both genders. Some agencies/Orphanages probably have a yearly income requirement. But as long as you can provide the basics and not be struggling greatly to make it.  

That said would you really want to take on a child if you are studying full time?  With most part time jobs they typical don’t offer health  benefits.  Why not just finish your education, get your full time job started, then adopt.

Adoption from foster care is the cheapest form of adoption.

I know for my own experience adopting from China, China has certain rules and regulations -- a household income of at least $10,000 per person including adoptee, a networth of at least $80,000.  They no longer allow singles to adopt, it must be a two-parent (male/female) family.  These are their rules and each country is different.

If you are serious about adopting a child, but don't have alot of money, you should look into the foster care system.

I know a single woman who adopted 2 girls from China. Never married because she didn't want to. Just wanted children. This was more than 10 years ago.

In the UK you can adopt if single.  You may even get a very young child although you are more likely to be approved for a toddler or older.  If you are willing to take a sibling group even better!

You don't have to be wealthy, you don't have to be at home all the time and you don't have to own your own home.  

Look on some sites, for example AdoptionUK and Be My Parent - they have loads of info about fostering and adoption in the UK.

You could also ring the adoption/fostering team at your local social services office (look on you local council website, there should be contact numbers there).  They will be more than happy to talk to you and give you more information.

My hometown neighbor raised an adopted son on her own. She never did marry and was a great mom.  She is in the medical field and makes good money but in no way shape or form is rich.  I think where there is a will there is a way.  You need to look beyond the stereotype.  Good luck..............

The two parent home does take preference to a single parent home.  But single parents can still adopt.  You work part time, study full time, there'll be no time for the child.  Wait until you are done with school and can provide a decent living as well as have time for the child before adopting.

It depends on what type of adoption you are considering pursuing.  

But it seems kind of hypocritical when we take babies away from single mums who work part time, study full time and are not very well off, just to give them away to a single mum who works part time, studies full time and is not very well off.  Don't you think?  I mean, not trying to be rude here, but this is exactly the type of situation most relinquishing mothers are in in the first place.

If you're single, in school and working part time, but want to adopt, why not wait until you graduate and get established in your career, then start the process?

Have you looked into foster-adoption?  There are kids in the foster care system here in the U.S. who need parents.  Single people can adopt.  Also, you don't have to be wealthy.  My parents adopted me from foster care when I was a toddler.  They weren't wealthy.  You can contact an attorney or the Department of Children's Services (or the equivalent) in your area to find out more.

You might want to consider cutting your school down to part time if you're still in school if and when you decide to adopt.  I know how time consuming college is.

I would definitely say there would be a preference towards a parent (even single) who can afford to properly feed, house, and provide health care for a child in addition to providing a stable, caring, nurturuing, loving environment.
