Taking only 18mg of Niacin enough to help aid in hair growth during pregnancy and how long does it take the vitamins to get into your system after taking them. And will adding an extra 100mg of niacin hurt my 7 week old fetus? I'm asking because my 1st Doctors appt isn't until July 25th and I'm just wondering because i bought some over the counter prenatal vitamins because my hair seems to be breaking off instead of growing.

  1. That's really a question that should be solely addressed to a medical professional.

  2. Deffinately wait and talk to your doctor about any changes you are thinking to make with Niacin.

I'm not sure how long it takes to get this vitamin in your system, but it is a water saluable vitamin.  I Googled 'niacin during pregnancy' and quite a few websites popped up.  I looked into one of them for you and this is what it said...

15-20mg of niacin is the recommended daily intake.  The maximum dose for adults is 35mg/day.  Taking too much Niacin in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can lead to birth defects.  If you are taking your prenatal vitamins and eating right, you should be getting enough niacin in your diet.  It stated that supplementing is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding!!

Some foods that contain niacin are...whole grains, cereals, wheat germ, rice, speghetti, flour, potatoes, milk, cheese, tofu, avacado, legumes, peanuts, yeast, mushrooms, spinach, eggs, tuna, cod fish, blue fish, chicken, shrimp, ham, and steak.

Pregnancy does weird things to your body.  I understand how frusterating it can be trying to keep up with yourself, but having to worry about everything you do affecting your unborn baby.  You sound like you are going to be a great mama.

You are doing the right thing by asking questions.  Just remember that when you ask people's opinions, you are never going to like all of them:)  Especially when it comes to having and raising a baby.  Opinions are like *** holes, everyone has one!  And most people think theirs don't stink:)

Best of luck to you and your unborn baby!!!  God bless:)
