I am doing a preschool holiday themed project. They go to different stations such as art, phonemics, story, and math. For math i chose a hannukah project, and art is kwanzaa. I need an idea for story which is a christmas theme ( any story book ideas with follow up activity?) and phonemics is the the sound "ick" aand its new years eve. Maybe some words that have ick in them that preschoolers would understand? Please help!

  1. Christmas in the Big Woods -- a very juvenile version of The Little House on the Prairie.  We made all the things in the book that Ma and the girls made for their holiday, such as sugar cookies, home made decorations, etc.

We discussed traditions and the differences in the holiday then and now.

As for "ick"  -- I think you mentioned that it would be for New Year's Eve?  I can't think of a piece of literature that is primarily "ick" phonemes, so maybe you could make some word cards on New Years' party hats or favors, with the beginning sound on one card and the rest of the word on a party favor.

(Maybe use a noisemaker.  If they can put the initial sound to the "ick" on the noisemaker and read the word, they get to blow the noisemaker!  Little kids would  love that!)

Teaching word families is a great way to teach reading, and it would be  fun game that incorporates New Years' as well.

  2. I like Frosty the Snowman for a theme about Christmas.  It's got a great theme song too.  Find a coloring book with a simple snowman and white out the face and buttons.  Have the kids draw their own faces, and using buttons you have already gathered, let them choose three to glue onto their snowman.  Then cut them out, paste onto black construction paper and you have a nice little gift for someone!

As for the New Year's theme with the sound "ick" I like the idea of party hats with "ick" on some and consonants that have to be put together to spell a word!  You could "celebrate" by giving each pair of children a colored foil star on their hat when they correctly make a combination....  Everyone wins!

"Ick" words:  chick, click, l**k, lipstick, pick, sick, slick, stick, tick, trick,

  3. well Santa Clause has many different names...like Jolly Old Saint N"ick" lol...maybe use Santa Clause and his story of how he delivers presents to good little boys and girls on Christmas Eve...as far as an activity for that story, maybe have the kids make Santa, Reindeer, or Elf puppets out of paper bags and then have them pick out a name for their puppet that has an "ick" sound in it?  Hope this helps!
