Prime or Zoom Lens?

I have a heavy dslr (1.3x) and was trying to decide on a lens to take with me for a up-coming trip to Vegas.

Canon 24-70mm f2.8 (2.1 lb.)

Sigma 50mm f2.8 (11.3 oz.)

Thanks for all inputs.

  1. Canon 24-70mm f2.8

  2. I would go with the Canon 24-70. It will give you more versatility and has the same max aperture. If you want to get a 50mm lens get the Canon 50mm F1.8 it sells for less than $100.

  3. I say get the Canon lens to go with your Canon camera.  If you are going to get a 50mm lens, it would be a shame to get one with only f/2.8 as a maximum aperture when there are f/1.8's and f/1.4's out there.  The zoom you mention has got 50mm f/2.8 anyhow.  You may as well have the flexibility offered by a zoom for your trip, too.  There is plenty of scenery for the wide end and a lot of people watching to be done with the tele end.
