  1. Most pros turn pro at a young age, usually 16-18, maybe 20. The key to becoming a pro is PERFECT PRACTICE. These players usually start out as young as four, and continue to play tennis until they retire. Having a good coach and trainer is also important. They spend a lot of their life at the courts, tweaking forehands, backhands, serves, etc.

Most pros have competed in Junior competitions. When they are around this age, they take tennis to another level. As coaches say, tennis is 80% mental and 20% physical. Or they may have a different combination of numbers. The point is, tennis is mostly a mental game. I personally don't think you can become pro without strategy.

And the most important rule to becoming a pro is: NEVER GIVE UP. Do you think Maria Sharapova threw down her racquet and said "I HATE TENNIS. I'M NEVER PLAYING AGAIN!". Probably not. As she has quoted, "I know it's as tough for my fans to handle my losses as it is for me. But let me point something out. I didn't leave my mom at the age of seven for nothing. I didn't spend six hours a day practicing in the Florida sun at the age of nine for nothing.... I didn't sleep in little cots for three years, eating oatmeal out of a packet while playing in the middle of nowhere for nothing. All this has helped me build character and there's no better asset than being able to stand up for yourself."

You need courage, patience, determination, sacrifice, and perfect practice to become a pro. Work hard now, work less later. Sharapova worked very hard as a child and teen. Take a look at her now, No. 2 in the world, formally No. 1 for a VERY long time. Making millions of dollars... and it all started out with courage, patience, determination, sacrifice and perfect practice.
