hey everyone well we recently bought our first home and realized how expensive the light bills are. heres the problem my grandmother is 81 but shes very healthy goes walking goes places alone etc.. the problem is she keeps leaving all the lights on in the house when shes not home or when shes sleeping. she leaves the closet lights on. and its driving me and my mother crazy. Each month the light bill is more and more expensive. my mother keeps arguing to her telling her we cant keep up after her, and she needs to be more concious about the electricity but is there anything we can do? any suggestions? We tell her everyday but she doesnt get it.

  1. Set the lights on timers.....or unscrew lights in the closets......good luck!

Or get those energy efficient light bulbs. They are supposed to save you money and they last 7 years!

  2. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.  Leave a reminder on each door.

  3. Well, ask her to pay the electric bills.

Alternatively, you could consider using motion sensors to deal with lights.

If someone is moving around, the light stays on.

No movement, after 5 minutes, lights go out.

  4. Maybe she honestly forgets to turn off the lights. I f that's the case the only thing to do is stay behind her and turn them off yourself. I hope it's not a medical issue. Or she is just pissed off at everyone for riding her back and this is her way of pay back. Try easing up on her.

  5. No suggestions here. Your grandmother is healthy, but I'm sure there is a reason she is needing to live with someone at 81. If that is your only issue, keep following her around. I have heard a lot of real 'war' stories about elderly people living with family and from the stories I get, yours is minor. Just remember one day she will be gone and you and your mom will look at the lights with fond memories. I wish I still had my grandmother, I do miss her....Good Luck and God Bless

P.S. I just read the one about timers on lights,,,now that is a great idea....

  6. Tell her that if this continues you will need to start charging her for the portion of the light that she is spending or wasting, rather. Maybe that will get her to remember
