Projector Lamp question?

I have a Sharp XG-P20EU projector. I have plenty of life left on my lamp, but i know some day it will die though. So, in trying to plan ahead, i'm researching for a new lamp. I need a 220W UHP lamp. Now, I know lamps are expensive, but every lamp I can find costs more than I paid for the entire projector. Can I only use a 220W uhp lamp made by sharp, or is there a cheaper lamp I could use?

I see what you mean. The cheapest one I can find is $470. There aren't any generic options for it either. I'm surprised because this isn't a newer projector and you'd think the bulbs would be more reasonable. I'd just keep using it until the bulb goes and then hope you can find them for less.

you may have a problem with buying in advance!

it is always advised to buy the manufacturers bulb also projector bulbs have a 30 percent fail rate before 20 hours and when this happens you are covered with a replacement guarantee if you buy in advance and do not use for a while and it does blow before 20 hours your guarantee may expire.

Phillips....GE.......Almost all lamp companies make projector lamps.  Contact a local C.E.D. wholesale electric store and order one through them.  It will probably save you 25% over Sharp.

It's not just a question of wattage ... you also need to be sure the geometry is the same otherwise the light won't focus or there will be improper masking or the lamp simply won't fit.

The XG-P20EU is a pretty bright projector, so I'm not surprised the lamp is a bit more expensive than average. That said, I have found prices for the lamp for my projector lamp vary between $160 and $570 ... and it took a while to find the cheaper price, so keep looking there may be somewhere selling one cheaper (The best price I found was $468 ... vs a high of over $700).

If it were me, and I'd paid about the price of a lamp for a projector that originally sold for $9000, unless I was particulalry attached to the projector for some reason not immediately obvious based on the specs, I'd be tempted to use up the lamp and buy a new projector. After all you can get 1080p projectors with far better contrast ratios for $1800 these days (and I saw a Benq 8700 with spare lamp recently for $700).

Unfortunately projectors are getting almost like printers ... you can buy a new one for less than the price of a replacement cartridge.

Yes u could find other options to buying cheaper lamps.. like the answer above me that sounds reasonable.. but also try using ebay...hope this works! an good luck
