Question:

Proper Way to plant Lilac Bush??

dig a hole wider then the roots and as deep as the roots.

Ok, so when do i add the compost/dried manure?? before i put the bush in or on top of soil? or what??

Any lilac advice very helpfun! =)

Also, how much water do they need???

  1. You can amend with a little compost at planting time.  The soil that you dig out of the hole - mix in some compost with that...no more than about 1 part compost to 4 parts soil.  Then use the mixture to back-fill the hole.

    Firm down the soil after you plant.

    Water deeply at planting time.  Then 2-3 times a week in hot weather, once a week at most when the weather cools down.  Not at all after it drops its leaves in the fall...it should be good to go until spring.

    Next year, you should only need to water if there's a dought.


  2. Cat's right on all counts, but I wanted to add one thing.  Lilacs can get quite tall.  I have one that is best "smelled" from a second story window.  So, keep the height potential in mind when locating it.  Figure on 12-15 feet in height.
