  1. Give the children lots of controlled choices allow them to explore and discover. Look outside the box let them be creative with items not necessary designed for craft, such as sensory painting use coffee, lemons, oranges to add smell to paint etc.. use everyday items that children would ordinarily not have the opportunity to explore these can often be more stimulating than expensive toys. In my class I have created zones and each day I put out items /activities for the children to choose from loosely connected to the zone. the children understand that in the craft zone/area there will be something creative but not always paint, glue, paper, etc


  2. Schedule includes child-choice of centers for at least 1/3 of the day.

    At least 5 centers in the classroom.

    Developmentally appropriate materials.

  3. outdoor education especially for this age group  'forest school' - if you are in the UK especially with the changes that will be taking place in the EYFS promote learning outside of the classroom.

    Some suggestions: water and sand with access to various equipment at child level, role play area with changing focus: vet, hairdresser, market stall, garden centre, cafe, mediacl centre, post office, etc: Access to a range of diverse and multi cultural resources, small world, creative and messy play area, mark making ares, mathematical development resources and activities, music and stories, physical challenges, a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, gardening, cooking, displays that stimualte and that children have contributed to , a range of natural and interesting objects to explore and investigate, construction, the list is endless, check the early years foundation stage for more ideas.
