  1. i just did this,

if your (Audio receiver) has an input and output (HDMI) connect the PS3 to the (input part) of the receiver than get a (2ND HDMI cable) and connect it from the (out put) section of the receiver to the TV. On the Ps3 go to the Audio setting on the XMB menu, select (HDMI) it will decode everything even TRUE DTS , DTS MASTER  AUDIO and the new codecs. (assuming your receiver has them) check the front of the receiver incase your not sure, they always have a lable of what they can play. (NOTE) most receiver you have to select (PCM audio or HDMI) as the source of its sound, not all switch over by themselves. You (will not) need the Optical cord afterwards. make sure the TV sound is off because your reciever will push sound out from the TV as well. (no need for the TV speakers to play to).

If you have a receiver that doesn't have HDMI input and output you ll have to use the (optical cable) from your Ps3 to the receiver. then in the XMB go to audio settings and hit (optical) it will display all the channels of audio it can decode. You will not get the new codex's but more than enough to hold you over till you get a new AMP with only 2 cords.

  2. use an optical cable to your receiver

  3. If your receiver supports HDMI inputs/outputs, then all you have to do is connect it to your receivers input. Select HDMI as the source on your surround sound, and you're good to go. If your receiver DOES NOT have HDMI inputs, then you'll have to resort to an Optical Cable (TOSlink) and connect it from your ps3 to your receiver. Make sure that you change the audio settings on your ps3 to output through optical and not hdmi. Please be aware that optical only supports up to 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS. If you're trying to use Blu-ray Discs with your ps3, it can not handle the new HD sound codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MAster Audio) Hope this helps.
