Puerto Rico and Puertoricans?

Question

Dear Friends,

I am planning my first visit to Puerto Rico, looking for my roots en el Isla del Encanto and I would appreciate any kind of information you could give me.

I am interested in any aspects, even those aspects which usually tourists don't care about.

As much as I hate to agree with jumpfile, I had the boat at Fajardo for about 6 months before I couldn't take it any longer and sailed over here to Antigua... which I LOVE... it's everything a person could want in living the Caribbean life and an almost complete opposite to Puerto Rico.

I'd have to disagree with these two other guys who have showed their ignorance by generalizing a COMPLETE culture. Note, there are a lot of immigrants in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Particularly from Dominican Republic and Haiti.

You have Puerto Ricans who know perfect English(especially in the metro area) and Spanish, those who only know Spanish, and those who know a numerous of other languages.

Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico vary; not only in looks(you have blondes/red heads, like you have people of black skin, and anything else in between), but in personalities and styles. There are lots of Puerto Ricans who are into the whole preppy look, rockish look or anything chic. Unlike what the Spanish tv potrays of Puerto Ricans with these "reggaetoneros" many Puerto Ricans do not dress like that. They're very lively people and love to party.

The people of Dorado tend to be the higher class of Puerto Rico. There are plenty of bars/pubs especially in San Juan. Shannon's is extremely popular amongst the Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico. Everywhere you go in the world you'll find rude people, but from what I've seen in Puerto Rico, many people are extremely sweet and loving, but WON'T get pushed around by anybody especially people who aren't even from Puerto Rico.  It's quite easy, if you give respect, you'll get it in return.

In other words, don't go to Puerto Rico with a sense of superiority because they're far from vulnerable. If you sit down to talk with a lot of them, they're extremely smart and well educated.

My friend stay away from this island, people are rude, annoying and problematic, plus take a look at the news, the crime scenes is an epidemic.  If you still plan to go be careful, and people are rude, best of luck.
