HELP!

We have a 7 month old puggle (pug/beagle mix) who has a serious issue with chewing. He has PLENTY of toys of all shapes, sizes, textures, etc that were bought to try to get rid of his issue (to no avail!). He will tear things up, chew on rugs, shoes, anything he can get his teeth on. He's even chewed holes in the corners of our walls! We've tried bitter apple, which also did not work. Everytime we see him doing this, we pull him away, and in stern voices say NO. He gets at least 2 walks (1/2 hour each) per day, and NOTHING seems to be working. Is there something else we can try to rid him of this awful habit? We'd like to be able to get new furniture without fear he'd have it torn up within minutes.

Thank you!

  1. Crate him when he's unattended or you're not home.

Is he doing this when he's left alone?  If so, then you should have a discussion with your vet about Separation Anxiety.  Destruction is a common symptom.

  2. Whenever you cross breed two animals, you get more than just a cool name; you tend to get the worst of each parent's genes which is a fundamental concept in biology. Beagles are notorious chewers.

  3. This dog will never out grow chewing.  My cousin has one, a lady walked up to her and asked how much he has destroyed?  She was a breeder and said they never out grow it.   Good luck with your hybred.
