I'm wondering if the punches in Muay Thai and Boxing are any different? and also I heard the punches in Muay Thai are weaker in Boxing. Can you fix that with a little weight lifting and some training? Or is it something only boxing can fix? I wanna take Muay Thai but I want to deal some good fast Banging punches too :D

  1. The punches are similar, the stances are similar, and the way to gain more punching power is to punch more.  Good fast banging punches come from power generated by good footwork, the waist and spine all working all together.  Power comes from the floor, otherwise bodybuilders would all be power punchers.

The spine is the axle, the waist is a wheel and the feet drive everything while remaining solid.  This is how to get power in a punch.  The hand is propelled by the body.  Look at it as one smooth unfolding unit.

Heck, if you like PT, do a bunch of pull ups and dips develop some back and upper body strength, there are also a bunch of core exercise using a weight plate.

In a fight situation core strength and cardio will be you life savers.

  2. The punches in Muay Thai COME from western boxing. It's a matter of training. Muay Thai guys generally don't have the best punches, but they're learning so much, and it's believe that elbows are stronger anyway. You can train to make them better and be good with your hands, however. Traditionally the only punch pissing is the uppercut, but the other punches are straight from western boxing.

The stance might be a little different, but it's just because of the different combat sports.

  3. Muay Thai punches are weaker than Boxing punches... well no matter what martial art.. a punch is a punch. If you have the same strength as a boxer than you can punch just as hard as him if your in muay thai.. and they probably have harder punches because that's all they do.

  4. I actually watched this interesting show on National Geographic a few months ago (can't remember what it was called right now, sorry).  In it they looked at the punch of a boxer versus the punch of an MMA artist...turned out that the MMA artist had WAY more power in his punches.  So I really wouldn't worry a whole lot about Muay Thai punches being weaker...it's going to have more to do with the individual anyway.
