Punta Cana Tan?

Hey everyone! Me and my family are expecting to take a trip to Punta Cana and were wondering about something...

Is it nessesary to tan before going? I've never actually tanned before hand and I've never been to Punta Cana either. Also, are there any tanning tips people can give me? I don't burn too quickly, my skin is fairly pale, but I would just like to know the precautions.
