My neighbor gave us a whole bag of 5 purple cabbages, but I am running of ideas to cook with so many heads of cabbage. Do you have any recipe ideas?

"Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamins K and C, also a very good source of dietary fiber, manganese, vitamin B6 and folate, and a good source of thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, potassium, vitamin A, tryptophan, protein and magnesium."

  1. I don't like to give recipes here as everyone's taste is different, you are a better judge of what sounds good so try Allrecipes.com. They have user ratings and  lots of recipes.

    Try sweet and sour cabbage.

Or fried red cabbage and apples. My wife and kids don't like cabbage as much as I do but will eat those.

  2. Mmmmm Mmmmm; boy do I ever.  It's an old german recipe, and kinda fattening, but really good.

You'll need a huge fryer, preferably cast iron with a lid.

Fry 1\2 lb bacon, and when almost done, toss in 1 large sliced onion.  Then load in 2 heads of sliced cabbage, and add about 1\2 cup water.  You can also season with pepper; then cover and fry (or let it cook down).  Keep frying until cabbage is well done.

My mother use to cook this, and I really miss it.

    Good luck.

  3. SAUTEED PURPLE CABBAGE

    1 sm. purple cabbage

    1 sm. purple onion

    Salt and pepper

1 tbsp. butter or olive oil

Shred cabbage and onion and mix together thoroughly. Heat butter or olive oil in a large skillet or saute pan and then add cabbage and onion mixture. Stir often and saute until tender. Season to taste. Beautifully colorful dish that's just a little different side dish.

  4. A lot of types of purple cabage can be eaten raw in a salad, which is quite nice.

You can do many things with cabbage.....stir fry with potatos, cummin, mustard.

There are also many cabbage recipes in Chinese cooking. Stir fry with sliced ham, onions, garlic, vinegar (chinese style vinegar).

  5. Eat it raw as salad.. shred it... some thousand island sauce will be great!
