When you tip at a ship like Jewel off the seas for things like room service what kind of amount is considered as minimum? $1? $5 or what? I dont wanna offense any one and I dont wanna put more dollar than necessery on tiping so please give me some good advice here.

Please note that I am not talking about either mandatory tiping to the crew (pre paid) nor the 15% bar tips that goes automaticly here and I knew that you basicily can pay what amount you whant but I could use some guidelines here. Johan

  1. Tip according to quality of service. when it comes to tipping, you really do "get what you pay for" just go with your gut and be as generous as possible

  2. I usually tip 1 or 2 for room service.  1 per bag for the porter when arriving and leaving the port and 5-10 for a tour guide, depending on the length of the tour.

  3. I have cruised on the Jewel and many other RC ships and also use room service regularly.  Here's what I suggest.  I always take a bunch of $1. and $5. US for this type tipping and for bartering at markets.  When we order room service we usually tip at least $2.00 US for a small order, like a sandwich or a pot of coffee..  Although a tip is not required this amounts to about what a food server would get from adding  that15% gratuity to a drink order.  If the server brings a big tray with breakfast or dinner  for 2 or 3 people, plus coffee we usually tip $3. or more.  The real answer is you just have to kinda use your own judgment and if you are normally a generous tipper, tip bigger.  Remember also that your waiter in the main dining room is getting $3.50 a day to serve you a 5 course meal.

  4. I've never had someone on a cruise extend their hand for a tip.  They get paid $10/per person per cabin every day.  So, they know this.  However, if you really appreciated thier service (as my husband and I did), we gave a $20 at the end of our stay when we were saying goodbye.  Our room service (housekeeper) was really great.  We talked with him every day, and he knew our names.  Whenever we'd see him in the hallway or near our room, he'd always greet us by our names, and we'd even have small conversations with him.  We really appreciated his kind service to us.  :)

If you don't get someone who doesn't impress you more than his/her job requires of him/her, there is no need to tip extra.
