I'm from a small town in Ontario and on Sunday I'm leaving for Riviere-du-Loup, about ten hours into Quebec. I'm going to college and living on residence. I have some french experience, but I was wondering if you might have any tips for living in Quebec. I'm taking the train in (never done that before) so if you have any tips for that, that'd be great too! I just don't really know what I've got myself into!

  1. K, well, there's two different types of french: Quebecois and France French. The french you probably know is France french. It's going to be tough at the beginning, because Quebecois is much harder to understand (we've got a weird accent). But lots of Quebeckers know a bit of english, so you can speak a bit of french, and they'll speak a bit of english. As time goes on, you'll get used to the quebecois accent, and you'll realize that there are MANY english speakers in Quebec, too.

  2. I'm from Ontario too, and been to MTL and some other places few times. I took a bus couple times, and it's nothing to worry about, Quebec is a blast, laid back, and really fun, not to mention it feels like you're out of Canada!

All I can say is not to worry, people there speak english too, atleast most so you'll be fine.
