  1. This site shows either blood poisoning, possibly from a makeup based in lead and vinegar, cancer, or just old age.

She was replaced by James Stuart, also called James VI, King of Scotland, and James I of England, Scotland, and France. The Kings of England had included the throne of France since Edward III.

Here's a little marital background. Henry VII was the father of Henry VIII, he married his daughter to James IV of Scotland. This eventually made the two kings brothers in law. The Stuarts had a son, who became James V of Scotland. He married Marie de Guise, a French noblewoman. Their only child to survive into adulthood was named Mary. She grew up in France, expecting to marry the Dauphin, heir to the French throne, but he died young, and Mary had to leave, at the evident insistence of her mother in law Catherine de Medici.

Mary was a threat to Elizabeth, a Tudor descendant who was also a Catholic. She asked permission to travel through England on her way to Scotland, and was refused. They had to take the more dangerous route by sea. Mary didn't forgive things like this easily.

Elizabeth tried to keep Mary in check by a marriage. She was trying to arrange a marriage between Mary and the Duke of Leicester, Robert Dudley, long believed to have been Elizabeth's lover, until his wife Amy accidently fell down the stairs and broke her neck.  This caused much suspicion, making Dudley a liability to Elizabeth. He was, however, intensely loyal to Elizabeth, so marrying him to Mary seemed a good idea. Dudley disagreed, going so far as to write to Mary saying that he wasn't interested, which naturally infuriated Elizabeth.

Mary turned around and married Lord Darnley, also a claimant through the Tudor line, and he somehow managed to stay sober just long enough to give her a son, James.  Darnley was murdered sometime later, and from there Mary Stuart started a downward spiral that was far too tragic to be funny. She was a Catholic woman, with a heart that too often ruled her head, in the midst of a rapidly Protestantizing Scotland. Her son was taken from her, her supporters failed to resist the Protestants, and she ended with a poor little broken hearted dog as her mourner, who refused to eat and finally died for the loss of his mistress.

So, Elizabeth and Mary were both great granddaughters of Henry VII, and James was his great-great grandson. Elizabeth and James V had parents who were siblings, thus making them first cousins. This makes Elizabeth and Mary second cousins, and Elizabeth and James VI (or James I of England and Scotland) third cousins.

  2. Elizabeth's father was Henry VIII.

Henry's eldest sister was Margaret Tudor.

James was the great-grandson of Margaret Tudor.

Elizabeth and James were distant cousins.

Elizabeth was the last Tudor to rule England.

James was the first Stuart to rule England, only child of Mary Queen of Scots.

Mary was the daughter of James V, King of Scotland and Mary Guise.

Margaret Tudor, eldest sister of Henry VIII, was the mother of James V, King of Scotland.

    Descent from Henry Tudor:

    1. Henry Tudor, Senior

    2. Margaret Tudor

    3. James Stuart

    4. Mary Stuart

    5. James Stuart

    1. Henry Tudor, Senior

    2. Henry Tudor, Junior.

    3. Elizabeth Tudor

Elizabeth died from blood poisoning, caused by the arsenic contained in her face powder.

Due to the loss of her hair, one of the first signs of arsenic poisoning, she wore wigs.

  3. When she died on 23 March 1603, she was succeeded by the Protestant James VI of Scotland, the son of Mary, Queen of Scots.
