Well I have been with my job for about 4years or so, I am a bit tired of it. I want to start going to school full time instead of part time, if I leave for that reason will I be able to collect unemployment? I am in CA and I know each state has rules and etc. Thanks in advance.

  1. No, unemployment is only given if you get laid off, or fired but not for serious misconduct, not just because you decide to quit and go back to school.

  2. Check with the labor dept but it is unlikely that you will be able to collect unemployment if you quit to be a full time student.  Unemployment benefits are for people who lose their jobs and is meant to tide them over till they get another job.

  3. No, for at least 2 reasons.  If you quit voluntarily you are not eligible.  And since you won't be able and ready to accept immediate employment, you're not eligible.

Unemployment rules are pretty much standardized nation wide.  It's intended to protect you from a job loss through no fault of your own.  If you voluntarily quit or are discharged for cause, you're not eligible.
