I am shopping for a GPS system.Consumer reports rates them for all different features. There are some features that I do not know about, and wondered which ones are inportant to have, and which ones would rarely get used. The ones I am unfamiliar with are "routing options","routing time",and traffic capable. What do these options mean? Thanks.

  1. "routing options" is how versatile the unit is in getting you around roadblocks, traffic, etc. if it turns out the "fastest" route isn't an option.  E.g., some units allow you to avoid up to a specific point on your route (which is very cool), some allow you to take a detour of x number of miles, some allow you to simply plan an alternative that may or may not avoid the problem (less versatile).

not sure what "routing time" is; maybe refers to how long it takes to plan a route?  or, perhaps, to whether it can give you an estimate of how long it will take to get somewhere?

"traffic capable" means that it can get real-time traffic updates and inform you where there is traffic as you're driving, so you can effectively avoid it before you run into it.

I've only had one system, but i can recommend it, the TomTom One; isn't as capable as many systems out there but is much cheaper and is a great deal for the price--can do most of the stuff you really want out of a portable GPS and is

    easy to use.
