Question about a .22?

Question

I'm 16, and I am shopping around for my first .22. I went to the Sportsmans Warehouse and they had one of these for $180 http://www.savagearms.com/markiig.htm It came w/ scope mounts drilled and taped. I am wondering if its accurate, dependable, and a good price. I want a .22 that I can be more accurate with than I am with my pellet rifle (Crosman Storm XT , I can hit a 14.5 oz soup can from 50 yards, standing, w/ open sights).

That is a good choice.

The problem is your comments about your accuracy.  If you can't hit something with a 10/22, then your are not going to hit anything with the Savage.  Once a gun is sighted in, it is the shooter who is the problem.  Honestly, you need to work on your shooting skills more and worry about the brand of rifle less.

Their guns may not be as pretty as some of the stuff turned out by other companies, but Savage has a reputation for turning out good quality, inexpensive guns. My experience with Savage rim-fires has been that they will shoot better than the shooter. Apparently Outdoor Life shares that opinion.

Pretty much any rifle will be more accurate than a pellet rifle. Savage makes good guns. my friends savage .17 hit less than a half inch at 100yards. Remember when you buy a savage get one with a accutrigger.

as far as accuracy goes it alldepends on the shooter. for example i can shoot about 1 inch groups with my ar-15  at 100 yards with iron sights , but my dad can get 3 or 4 inches at 100. It all depends on how good of a shot you are. and since it has a scope accuracy should be no problem for any one.

Savage is making a very reliable and good shooting gun, at a very competitive price nowadays.

You can't go wrong.

Accuracy relies a bit on the ammo (what the gun shoots) and mostly on the person pulling the trigger.

I'd suggest a couple or more brands of ammo to see what the gun will shoot better.

Usually a gun will shoot a couple of different brands of ammo better than another, but we don't have the magic formula for that.

Trying some brands will let you know.

I doubt if you can get a better rifle for the price.

My personal preference is for Marlin's Model 39, but it will cost you twice as much as the Savage.

I think that's a great choice, with a couple of reservations.

First, if you can, see how much more the heavy barreled synthetic stock version is and if they have it. While the Mark II you show is good, the heavy barrel is better, and with the cheaper yet practical plastic stock instead of the wood, it sould be about the same price or just a few dollars more.

Second, I have found that most "Combos" that come with scopes mounted are not necessarily a great deal as the scopes are sometimes cheap....AND that new shooters should learn to shoot using open sights rather than using a scope.

It may sould old-fashioned, but shooting with iron sights makes the new shooter focus on the basics of shooting rather than dealing with complex scope adjustments and it makes a much better trained rifleman. When I train new .22 shooters, they must be able to hit a Coke can at 50 yards regularly with open sights before moving to a scoped rifle. A novice who does not know how to shoot well just yet combined with not knowing how to zero and use a scope leads to frustration and quitting on the sport.

If the combo comes with a cheap Tasco or Bushnell scope, I really don't consider that much of a deal putting a dime-store scope on a fine shooting rifle. Consider saving up for a Simmons 22Mag scope, and many of the guys here recommend the BSA rimfire scope series as well.

im 16 too. i have been shooting a marlin model 60 since i was 10. great and very accuate gun. you can get it for around 180$ too. savage is not my favorite gun maker either

I have a Savage MK II exactly like the one you listed, I LOVE it, it's a very accurate 50 yard rifle. I also have a Savage MK II heavy barrel 22, and it's another awesome shooter. You;ll probably want to buy extra magazines for it, 10 rounds in each just doesn't last very long. I've had my wooden stocked Savage for over 2 years now, it's as accurate and dependable today as it was when I 1st got it. Both of my Savage 22's are accurate out to 100 meters. You'll end up buying a lot of different brands and types of ammo for it until you find the brand and type it likes. ALL 22 rifles are like this, they are very particular about ammo you use. What may work great in my Savage may give you 4 inch groups in yours. It's just the nature of the best when dealing with 22 rifles.

GET the Savage! You won't be disappointed.

It;s a good solid first .22, and if you've got some air-gun experience,

you will appreciate that Accu-Trigger.

You'll be hitting 'pop' cans at 50 Yd.s offhand pretty quick.

(BSA makes a nice inexpensive scope with BDC for the .22.)

I dont know why nobody has suggested a Ruger 10/22. You can pick a brand new for 220.00 (blued) 250.00 (stainless).

This gun out of the box is pretty accurate with Match Ammo.

I personally have invested 300.00 on new internal Parts.

The trigger pull is about 1 pound and give a clean crisp shot.

The gun is by far more accurate than i am.

Also whoever frowns upon my comment please explain why
