Question about buying a used car.?

My sister is looking for a car. We went and looked at a 1997 Oldsmobile, the man who was selling the car had gotten from some kind of action or something like that. The car had a two big dents on the right side. The man told us that it was caused because the car had been repossessed and that the owner must have kicked in the sides or done something to cause the dents right before the car was repossessed so that the car would have less value, he said that many people do this. He will fix it for $500.00.

So my question is : Does this story hold up, do people usually cause damage to the car before repossession, or is it more likely that the car has been in an accident.

Thank you!

  1. it sounds believeable if someone was taking your car wouldnt you want them to get the least out of it possible? but hey even if it was an accident, whats the damage its still just the two dents no matter how it happened. but what i would ask about is why it is going to cost 500 to repair. how deep are these dents? cuz thats a lil high. call a few shops and describe the dents and ask for like just an honest judgement.

  2. Wow, I'd be vary skeptical of buying this car. You gotta ask yourself: "Why is this guy selling it so quickly?" -- Sounds like he's "flipping" the car, he bought it cheap and wants to make a profit off of it.

Have a mechanic check that dude out thoroughly. It's sad, but statistics show that folks who make poor financial decisions do not take care of the maintenance on their vehicles.

And, yes, damage to a car that is about to be repoed is indeed a common occurrence. It is one reason why repo men like the element of surprise. They don't want to give the debtor the chance to do something drastic and stupid.

  3. It could be true. There are lots of ways it could have been damaged. But if the owner knew it was going to be repossessed there could be other problems with the car too Pass and find something else.

  4. these days you never know what the truth is but If the last owner was the kind of person that kicks a car, I wouldn't imagine this type of person put keeping their car in good shape on the top of their list of things to do.

I'd have the car inspected if your really interested in it.

but they have plenty of cars without dents, why waste your time on one that needs repairs?

  5. I've definitely heard these stories before, and I believe them. However, I would be a little leary of purchasing this vehicle if I were you. There are more options out there for you . You just need to do  a little more research. Check out this website:
