Okay, i have another question about diabetes.

I already asked one, but now I have another.

First of all, im a 13 year old girl & i have diabetes.

I know that high blood sugars are really bad for your body & can cause blindness & kidney failure & all of that. I already know that, so dont come on here just to give me the lecture about keeping my blood sugar under control, i already know. Thats what everybody else did on my other question.

Anyway, what i wanted to ask was, is having low blood sugars bad for your body just like having high blood sugars are? Because my blood sugar is never high, in fact its never above 130, but it seems to be low a lot. Im not talking low low, you know like passing out, i mean its like 50 or 60 a lot.

So i just wanted to knnow is having a low blood sugar really bad for your body ? by the way, sorry i wrote so much & thanx for your time.

  1. to be honest your doing amazingly well for someone your age and your going through puberty so it will make your blood sugar more difficult to control.i agree you need to keep an eye on it and have your endo help you adjust your insulin levels. it will be a constant battle while you are still growing. some kids have it easy, for others its more difficult to control. i used to be one of those kids. having low blood sugar puts a ton of stress on your body and can become dangerous. just do your best to control your blood sugar, if your doing everything you can and it doesnt help it isnt your fault! ive been type 1 for 10 years. i wish you the best of luck. also if your not on a pump or cgms you should look into it

  2. i think people are misunderstanding your question or they dont know what they are talking about, low blood sugars do NOT harm your body in the way high blood sugars do, they will not harm your organs or cause ne long term health issues. if they are always under 130 that is very good and you should be proud of yourself for keeping them that under control. if you arent going below 50 and you do feel the effects when you are at 50 you are fine, nething under 60 you should probably drink a little juice to bring em up a bit but you are fine, dont listen to most of the ppl who responded to this question they are incorrect, dont get me wrong i am diabetic and i do know the dangers of low sugars as far as passing out and coma wise but thats not gonna happen if you arent going under 50, just keep an eye on them when they are on the lower side to be safe, take care!

  3. Yes, having low blood sugar levels is very bad for you because it is far easier to fall into a diabetic coma when your blood sugars are low. Most diabetics with low blood sugar act dopey, and are sometimes unusally irritable. This can be cured quickly most of the time simply by eating or drinking something high in sugar.

Yours seem to be too low too frequently and you should talk to doctor about it. If you are on insulin, you may need less. If it's medication, then the doasge may need to be adjusted.

Since you have already had numerous occaisions of low blood sugar, you probably already know how to deal with it, but if you don't, please feel free  to email. I'm a type 2 diabetic in my 7th year dealing with it.

  4. Yes, having low blood sugars can be bad for you. Your brain gets energy from glucose. When are your blood sugars low? If it is in the morning maybe you need a snck before bed. You should talk to your doctor it is possible that you need to have your medication adjusted or make dietary changes.

  5. 50 to 60 is too low!! I am thinking you are taking a bit too much insulin. You need to aim at it not going below 70.

Ok, I said that, now I will explain.

Every time your glucose goes low, like below 65, you get less and less aware of the lows. Some people go so low that they go into insulin shock and coma because they cannot feel they are going that low. That is the danger of maintaining the low averages you are having.

So answer is YES!! it is just as dangerous to go low as to go high. We must aim at staying in a level zone somewhere between 70 and 120.

American Diabetes Association (ADA) versus American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE)

ADA says... A1c less than 7

    Before meals 90-130

    1-2 hours after meals <180

AACE says... A1c less than 6.5

    Before meals less than 110

    1-2 hours after meals <140

  6. It is still dangerous and unhealthy to have low blood sugars.  Have your dr adjust your insulin.  Good job on keeping it below 130!

  7. Having low blood sugar is just as bad for your body as having high blood sugar. The thing is that what is low for you may not be low for someone else. Especially considering that you have diabetes and trying to keep you blood sugar down. To be sure that it is ok in your case I would ask your doctor.

  8. Yes, they are doing more research on the effects of hypoglycemia, because now that most diabetics are achieving better control, the trade-off is more lows.  The most problematic are the extreme lows, like 40 or less, because they actually damage brain cells and can cause memory loss and other issues.  But even mild lows like 60 can cause problems over time.  If you're having more than one or two lows like that each week, see your diabetes educator so she can download your meter, help you identify patterns and make some slight tweaks to your insulin regimen.  Often it's very simple adjustments that have to be made.
