Question:

Question about my majors?

I figured I would major in Business Administration and minor in Art History, or the other way around, because I plan on being an art dealer/gallery director.

Would it be wiser to major in BA and minor in Art History? Or major in Art History and minor in BA? I plan on continuing my studies in the future and getting an MBA either way.

Also, do either of these majors allow me to study abroad?

  1. For some reason people love art degrees.  I attribute this to a sense of psuedo sophistication that can be attributed to the "Felicity TV show" phenomena which leads people to believe such degrees have some sort of great importance in society.  In reality they lead to the unemployment line.

Roman art is stdudied by archaeologists and classified by classicists at very universities that can read greek, latin and maybe gailic and have decent jobs on the hsitory channel.

People love history to so much that when any tenured prof. that dies is usually followed by a wave of applications for his position.

Art hsitory is the most useless degree colleges offer.  And dont count business admin as a great degree either.

Double it up with accounting, finance and or business and then you will be a  disgustingly hot commodity on a job market.  With all that money you can paint in a spare bedroom of your huge house and drive a bmw.  After 4 yrs of work experience get an MBA then sell your soul to work and you will earn a decent living.

Art history majoring is useless for the job market.  How can you get into an MBA program if you can't even get a regular job and have work experience?

Most MBA programs want 2-4 yrs of work experience minimum.  There are some programs for business wizzes on the fast track.

Or you could go Civil Eng./Business degree get an MBA and work for a major developer and be their gift from god and work as a project manager.  Most of the starbucks frappaccino drinking women working for housing developers have little more than a community college expereince and nothing in eng.

What ever you do stay away from these degrees:

    Art history

    communications

    music

    dance

    eng literature

    psychology

    sociology

    latin

    film

    religion

IF you major in those be familiar with the unemployment line.

Also only minor or double major in the following:

political science, history, finance, business admin.

With a business degree you need to specialize so double up with eng. or soemthing esle.

But please take my advice and stay away from art.

  2. I would recommend majoring in Business that leaves you open for more possibilities in jobs, both let you study abroad

  3. Both majors should allow you to study abroad.  A word of caution though, since you want to do a semester or year in another country tell that to your academic adviser and make sure they are aware of it.  Most people do their time abroad their junior year so you want to make sure that you are taking all the core requirements you need your freshmen and sophomore year in order to avoid a hellish senior year or having to stay a fifth year.  It can absolutely be done just plan your academic schedule accordingly.

Also there are some great summer abroad programs in Italy that would look fantastic on a resume and are focused obviously on classical Roman art.

As far as the MBA the most important things you will need to get irregardless of major are a good GPA and high GMAT score.  If you apply straight from undergrad those are the two most necessary items to have and honestly its just easier once your in school to get it all done back to back.

Either way you are going to need some type of job experience in art to secure a good position after college.  Internships at local galleries and museums are great as well as working for your art department on campus.  My school actually let me take a major role in developing the slide collections for their asian art class and introduction to art history classes as a sophomore in college.  That experience helped my resume tremendously.

Good luck with your chosen field and try not to listen to the nay sayers!  Success in the job market is not always determined exclusively by your chosen major.  The biggest factors from my experience in doing well in the job market are a proven track record of working hard (i.e GPA, work experience, recommendations) determination, and presenting effectively what talents you have that could be utilized by a potential employer.

  4. A major in Bus Administration  would allow you to enter the job world faster, but to be an art dealer you  really need to know about art.

    I's a though one.

I would major in art, minor in business and then get an MBA,

While you do the minor in BUS try to get the MBA prerequisites done, that way you don't waste units.

However, go to a good school, one with a good reputation, like

Yale or even NYU, or one close to San Francisco I mean if you wanna get into the business of Art you gotta be where it happens.

    One more thing:

try to find an art dealer to interview.

You can study any major abroad, as long as your school takes the units, so ask the university advisors about international exchange programs.

if you study art in Europe for instance, you'll get to know a lot of people in the arts.
