Okay so what does it mean when the attire for a restaurant is "Smart Casual?" Also can anyone tell me other dress codes for dining out and what they mean?

  1. Dressed-up Casual (a.k.a. smart casual): What you wear to evening office functions that don't require a suit, cocktail dress or other formal business attire. For men, a navy blue blazer with gray or tan pants are standard — you don't necessarily need a tie. Silk or banded collar shirts without a jacket are appropriate too. For women, jumpers, palazzo pants with matching or well coordinated tops work well. A black pant suit that can be dressed up or down is always a good investment for professional women, especially those who attend these events regularly.

  2. My understanding is that 'smart casual' is interchangeable with 'business casual.' I heard this in the UK, where I believe 'smart' means what people in the US would call 'neat' and 'pulled together', and maybe even 'professional'

  3. Smart casual means something like nice shoes, khaki pants, and a button down shirt. It would be even better if you added a sportcoat or nice sweater.

Formal means dark suit and tie.

Black tie means tuxedo, but you can get away with a dark suit and conservative tie these days - always with a white shirt, not a colored shirt.

  4. it depends but don;t go to the place wearing jeans. if you want to wear jeans then choose some dark colored ones.

  5. dress code # 71. that works all the time for any occasion. :D

  6. no ripped jeans

a shirt with sleeves usually  - not a t shirt.  has to have a collar.

doesnt have to have a tie or a jacket

    sneakers  not ok.

females wear a 2 piece or dress but preferably not showing too much skin - hence the smart. - something you would wear to work professionally

  7. tank, shorts, flip flops optional

  8. It depends on the type of restaurant you're going to.  If the restaurant has peanut shells on the floor or is fast food, or is a drinking hole, then you know you can wear jeans and a shirt or t-shirt and tennis shoes or sandals.  (people wear sandals, muscle shirts, shorts, flip flops, cut offs, or anything short only to drinking holes that are on the beach).

If a restaurant is in a hotel (or any place where there are linen napkins, nice silverware and glasses sitting on the tables) and is during the day then smart casual In my opinion:  For a guy it means nice shirt (could be checked, striped, etc.) and slacks and leather shoes.  The woman could wear a dress or pantsuit or just shirt and slacks and appropriate shoes.

If dining after 8 at a hotel you can wear nice slacks and a one-color shirt with a tie, leather shoes.  Some places require a jacket.  Your date could wear a Sunday type dress or a long dress in good taste.

  9. smart casual to me would mean no sloppy t-shirts or baggy jeans

  10. I would think that meant a nice pair of jeans, button down shirt or sweater, and no sneakers....

  11. you can wear like a nice pair of jeans with a dressy top and like nice shoes

  12. smart casual......tie not needed but jacket is

  13. usually casual business friday attire.  no sports jacket requird.  nice to see good pants and shoes. and dress shirt, no tie. sweater.

nothing sloppy, if all you had was a t shirt and pants, not too loud.

  14. Smart Casual = button up shirt w/ collar & This time of year I would wear a blazer over it w/ a pair of casual kaki pants & apair of casual leather shoes...not too dressy. And don't wear regular socks with it! I hate it when men dress nice then you look when they sit down and they have on socks that look like they are going to play ball!
