Question about strays...?

So I guess you could say I have porch-adopted two stray cats. (I already have a cat, and am pregnant, so I am not looking to make them indoor cats). I like feeding them and making sure they have water, but recently another stray cat that is really mean has been coming around eating all the food I leave out and not letting the other cats eat. I don't want to stop feeding them entirely, but I don't know how to get rid of just the one cat. Plus, every time I go out there to feed them the mean one growls and hisses at me! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! What should I do?

  2. Cats are territorial by nature.  The only way I've found to resolve this kind of issue is to take the hormones out of the picture, which means spaying and neutering.  You could start by box trapping (Have-A-Heart box traps) the mean cat & getting it neutered.  Doing this will calm him down considerably after a month or so.  I'm guessing he's a tom cat & can be ornery when it comes to territory & food.  When you're able, get the other 2 spayed or neutered too, otherwise you'll have more kittens and more of a problem down the road.  The other alternative is to check with a local cat rescue organization in your area and see if they can offer you any assistance.  They most likely have a box trap you could at least borrow.  They may even have a trap, neuter & release program they could help you with the costs of taking care of the spaying & neutering.  Check with them & see if they can help you.  Check w/your vet or local humane society to see what cat rescue groups they know of in your area.

  3. If you like, you can try to catch the one that is mean and take him to a shelter, and keep taking care of the two sweet ones.
