I need to know would a 10" or would a 12" sub be better for a car, and would Polk MOMO's be good subs to have? I was also looking at JL Audio subs but, the Polks have a deal going that is buy one get one free, so thats 150$ for two 10" 300W subs which is a lot cheaper than 300$ for two, so if anyone could help me on this, please do =]

  1. tschern has good points...

don't believe that some subs play better for certain kinds of music...it not true. sub can't think and don't know what they are playing. all sizes can play all feequencies the same way. the enclosure can be manipulated to be taylored to certain uses. like for hip-hop you would want it tuned to high 30 low 40Hz range....but for home theatre you would want low to mid 20's. you can make a 10 sound like a 15 and an 18 sound like a 6.5...all depending on the enclosure.

  2. Subs are always geared at what kind of music you listen to. Don't take a salesman's advice when he doesn't know you. Obviously, for hip-hop no question 12 inch is the way to go but if you are a rocker and like the tight snap feel the punch bass, 12 inch will not cut it and 10 is the way do go. 12's can be sloppy unless you really spend the money for a rock solid poly cone that won't tear apart at the seam. Take a hard look at your CD/MP3 collection and what kind of music you listen to more, then make your decision

  3. You need to look at them and compare and contrast them to see what is best for your application.

    1. How much space do you have? The 10's will need less airspace to function properly and might fit into your vehicle better.

    2. What type of sound do you want? The 12's might be able to go a bit lower and pick up some more of the sound compared to the 10.

    3. How much power do you have or will have? The 10's will need less power so you might be able to get away with a smaller less expensive amp.

    4. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want great music that is tight and can be heard at reasonable volumes? Or do you want everyone in the neighborhood to know you are coming?

    5. How much do you want to spend? The 10's should be cheaper then the 12's and as I stated before you can probably run a smaller and cheaper amp. A 2 10" system is usually cheaper then the same 12" system.

Those are just a few of the questions you might want to answer before you make your decision. After that the decision will be pretty clear.

EDIT: For the guys who are looking and critiquing my answer please note that these are general suggestions for narrowing your choices down to what will work best for your application. This includes budget, vehicle, airspace and more. When discussing a 10 needing less power it is straight up. The 10" variety sub of the same make and model as the 12" will GENERALLY require less power. Sure you could do a DVC or even a better sub that would need or handle more power but what I was getting at here is that the user is asking to compare the 10" version and 12" versions of the same sub. I've never seen a sub series where the 10" requires MORE power then the 12".

  4. try to listen 40Hz form 6.5" near the death or 40Hz from 18" able to kill you... or put the 6.5" speaker to one cubic feet box and 18" to one cubic feet box. this is not gonna work.

Tschern had good points, but it is too universal. some 12"s can need less space than some 10"s. it depends on speaker parameters, tuning etc. you cannot to do the same thing with two different (same diameter) speakers.

how can somebody tell "10"s will do the job and 12"s not" ????

i can make you sure that there are paper cone speakers hitting much more than others.

10"s are less sensitive. To make the same rumble, you have to push more power to them, not less power!!!

there is no magic. only physics.

  5. Go with the 12's. lower frequecy range so you can pick up the lows better and it will sound really good. MOMO's are not bad. I mean you can do better but you can definatly do worst (like the polk DB series or sony's lol). good luck man email me if you need it wowboy05@yahoo.com DUECES!!!!!
