Question:

Question about the Chronic?

Now a days, everyone is so hyped up about new Dr Dre stuff, esp Detox. But was there as much hype for the Chronic? I mean before the release of any music, like before people knew or heard any of the songs on it. People today would buy a Dre album just because its Dre, but was there this much excitment before? I was born in '90 so I obviously can't remeber, but to me, I wouldn't have been all that excited for it. I mean one of the weaker rappers in NWA who mostly produces and has Ice Cube write his rhymes comming out with a solo album doesn't sound all that great to me. Its like Diddy putting out albums...people don't really like Diddy, but the cameos and songs are pretty good. Was that like how people expected the chronic to be, was it a total mystery like Detox, or was it expected to be an NWA repeat? Thanks for the insight, just a little curious.

  1. People used to buy hiphop albums by word of mouth recognition.  In the early 90's everyone was fairly new and had to impress peers and fans by having good lyrics, a good flow, and a tight producer to match up with.

Nowadays hiphop is a misnomer because most music that is popular under this category contains few of these elements and popularity is driven by large corporate entities and A&R divisions who are willing to throw big $ at media outlets like MTV and Hot97.

  2. "Dre can't rap gnats outta his a**. "

Well, I've never heard that expression before.

  3. I was too young to remember.... but Hip Hop was a toddler too. i don't think the hype factor really played until BIG's Life After Death dropped.

  4. Yeah there was a lot of hype. At that time it was one of the most anticipated albums to come out. Living in southern CA at the time we were ready for the new album from Dr Dre without Ice Cube and MC Ren cause we wanted to see if he would be able to do it without him. He had The D.O.C. to write for him and ended up being a classic. That time was the best...

  5. No, the Detox is not an N.W.A repeat. On his interview in 2002, Dr. Dre said that he did not want to rap about guns and cars anymore. The Chronic was 16 years on Death Row (The Row now.) and disbanded he with N.W.A in 1992.

  6. you obviously wrote this cuz you have no Idea what your talking about NWA was released when you were born Ill have you know it was dre who is the founder of NWA and Ice cube doesnt write his lyrics just for the record, I happen to be very big into the genre of hip hop rap and r n b get your facts straight and as I read this what is your question about the chronic, is it the buzz? people are excited cuz dre is comin out wit another album duh, and diddy sucks as a rapper but was the man behind Notorious B.I.G. and thats why he has the recognition that he does come correct the next time you wanna ask something stupid about hip hop know what your talkin bout!

Ignorant maybe but everything Ive said on here is true and would you rather have the truth or everyone just poking their head in just to see you topic discussion is about and giving you a normal answer, I just see it as a good debate thanks for your input and the topic!!!!

PS People are just as excited about the new album as they were the chronic. For those who are into real hip hop!

  7. The only reason why the Chronic was any good was because Snoop was on it. Dre can't rap gnats outta his a**. He is a better producer than he is rapper. He has never been a good rapper but he is a phenomenal producer and that is what he should stick to. Oh and Eminem is the only reason why Chronic II was any good.
