Question about the Mission District.?

Only for people that have lived there or know of it, please.

I am going to look for an apartment, and have been told the mission is really the only place i will be able to find rent under 1100.

For a 21 year old girl, what are areas that i want to avoid living.

Im not bothered by people doing there own thing, but i want to feel okay about walking in and out late at night.

Any advice would be great.

There is intermittent gang activity between the Nortenos and Surenos; lately it was 26th and Folsom.  I would stay west of Folsom, south of 18th and north of 30th.  

Most of the crime (aside from gang-related activity) in the Mission is property crimes--car break ins, burglary, an occasional robbery; evening crime is usually after midnight.  Just keep your wits about you.

My daughter goes to school in the Mission district but got an apartment in Oakland.  She takes the Bart to school.  She was in a bad area of Oakland for about 2 years but is now in Lake Merritt and feels safe.
