Question about the poem The Raven?

By the end of the poem, what do you think it means that the Raven "still is sitting" in the speaker's chamber?

  1. That you can't avoid your ghosts. No matter what you do they will always be there.

There are a number of different way to interpret.  First is literally: the raven never left and if there is a supernatural cause or force behind it, then it too is there, haunting the speaker.  Next, you could make the case that there was NEVER a raven, but only the dark figments of the speakers mind.  It grew in his imagination until his own eyes and ears began creating it for him.  It will never leave: "nevermore'.  Third, half and half.  The raven flew in and then left, but it so disturbed the speaker that he sees it still and will always see it.  You could make a clever argument for any of these, citing the poem's other stanza's.
