Question about the post office?

what happens to all the letters and parcels that get sent but are never delivered they must end up some where and how does royal mail acually lose them in the first place

I have a theory that some of it goes home with the postman. Last year i ordered many things from different places, at xmas, and very little of it arrived- you expect occasionally to lose one thing- but several in a short space of time- yep- i think the postman haves it.

all misdirected mail ends up in N Ireland.  it is opened and if no return address can be found it is destroyed.
