Question:

Question concerning this ridiculous rule?

Maybe I just don't know enough about golf but..........why is this allowed to happen:

In every other sport in the world (I think), no one is required to keep their own score. Why is golf any different? The players have enough to worry about during the tournaments.........leave the scoring to the score keepers.

Your thoughts, please

Thanks,

Primo

  1. mate, golf has so many rules, that is just one of hundreds, you have a caddy as well, it was her own fault, plenty have done it before her and they will continue to do so.

  2. And in every other sport in the world, every player whines and cries and fakes fouls, because they have to rely on a referee.  Only in golf are you your own referee.  That is the beauty of the game.  Every golfer, and especially pros, know they have to sign a correct scorecard.  Lots of heartbreak on incorrect scorecards.  Roberto DiVincenza lost the Masters one year by signing for a score that was one stroke too high.  I guess Michelle's dad was not there to tell her what to do.

  3. Wie hater will always say "It's just rule.  Rules are rules."  It doesn't change the fact that this rule is stupid and removing her after she plays for another day seems suspiciously unfair.  Hey there are many stupid rules before this, such as black people had to sit in the back of the bus before white and can not sit in the white section.  I'm sure many golfer and fans will claim "these are rules !"  Does it justify all by simply saying "Rules are rules" ?

There are rules and there are stupid rules.

But why do I care anyway?  Just like its rule, golf itself is ridiculous, and even more ridiculous, the people who helps sustaining the "sports" of the golf.  Who's the dolt that's watching the golf on their HDTV set for more than 30 secs?

  4. rules are rules and golf is golf.

It will always be like that, there are so many rules.

She is not the first to have that happen to her

  5. It's why golf is different.  As noted, you call penalties on yourself.

Having played several amateur tournaments where you and your opponent keep each other's score, it's not always much fun to go hole-by-hole with your scorecard (especially with high numbers), but it's part of the game.  The system works 99.9% of the time, but on occasion, something happens (signing an incorrect score); in the case of Michelle Wie, any pro will tell you...the first thing you do when you're done with your round is go to the tent and sign your card.  Do not pass go, do not sign autographs or do interviews...go sign that scorecard.

  6. Hey, there was a golfer once who lost a tournt (was it a major too) for adding his score card wrong.  There was two golfers who signed the wrong carda nd were both disqualified.  ITs a dumb rule, but a rule, and rules are made to be followed, or

  7. It is bad for golf when someone goes great while playing, but then looses it all because of a "lawyer's trick" ...  a technicality.

Michelle, if a friend sends this question to you to read, you were great.

People may forget the 2nd place of a lot of events, but yours will stay with them for many years to come.

You'll be the favourite in your next event for sure.

Good luck and remember that old Latin saying:

    "Nil Considerate iligitimos"

(Never let the b******s get you down)

  8. Golf is also the only sport in the world where you're responsible for calling a penalty on yourself. Others CAN, but ultimately it is the golfer's responsibility to call/take penalty strokes on their own actions.

The scoring system is such that everyone keeps their own score as well as the scores of the people in their group. The scores are then compared at the end of the round (or end of each 9 if preferred) for accuracy and the parties involved are required to sign the card (or attest the card). that is like saying "yes i've seen this and it's correct to the best of my knowledge". it's the single most basic rule in tournament golf. I don't like the rule, though, because it requires a set AREA that the player can't leave before signing. I think there should be a set time limit instead.
