  1. Dell, HP (Compaq is part of HP now) just purchase components from other companies, and assemble the parts into complete computers.  Dell, for example, buys motherboards from Intel.  HP is well known for buying Motherboards from ASUS.

RAM is manufactured by a multitude of companies.  Kingston, Samsung, Crucial are just three.

  2. Dell, HP/Compaq make computers. they buy parts like motherboards and ram from other companies and put them together based on what a customer orders.

They do not manufacture motherboards, ram, video cards, etc. They only put the pieces together to make a pc. Dell does make changes to certain hardware...enough that it becomes a dell part. A good example of this is some older Sound blaster live cards marked SB0220.  You couldn't install Creative's drivers from their website, you had to use dell's drivers.

Companies like Kingston, buffalo, Corsair, geil. Make ram. However, I don't know if these companies actually make their ram or slap their label on pre-made parts.
