Question:

Question regarding driving test in Germany?

Hi, I'm going to go to Germany for a year or more. I've never had much use for a driving licence here in Ireland so haven't got one. Just wondering can I go to Germany and get a licence there as an EU citizen but not a German one, or would I have to have a licence before I get there?

Has anyone here from the EU got a drivers licence while temporarily in Germany?

  1. If you had an Irish driver's license, you could probably get an international driver's license to use in Germany.  They are only good for a certain length of time.  I do know that it costs a small fortune to get a DL in Germany.  I'm from the States, and have been driving for almost 30 years, and still had to take classroom lessons, and the minimum number of driving hours to get my German license.  Back then it costed 2,000 DM, about 1000 Euros.  They really s***w you over, so I wouldn't recommend trying to get a license here unless you live here permanently.

  2. I agree with what has been said about the costs. Driving lessons required before taking the test would cost you 1000 Euros as an absolute minimum (they are often of good quality and done by experienced people, but that's only a slight consolation in the face of such a monster fee).

As far as I know, the test can be taken in German only.

So, as has been said, you should get your licence in Ireland. With a driver's licence from an EU country, I can't see how you should get any difficulty in Germany - especially since all European driver's licences have a more or less standardised look nowadays (see links).

Please be aware that drivers under 21 years of age have to have ZERO alcohol in their blood in Germany [new law]. Same goes for all persons who have had their licence for less than 2 years. I don't know whether this second rule only applies to German citizens, but I wouldn't take the risk if I where you...

  3. Oh my God, I did my license back in 1995 and already paid for it 2500 DM and now it is probably AT LEAST 2000 Euro, I paid for only signing up back them 250 DM and I just checked my driving school which wants 265 euro just for signing up and then a 45 minute driving lesson 34 euro. Thanks god, I made it back then, soon it is so expensive that people can't afford it anymore but only buying a bike like in China.

  4. Doesn.t matter where u from .you will have to change your licence after 12 months in Germany.or face fine  up to 3 months of your wages if u been code.

Germany have a strict rule for driving test, eye test, theorectical and road tests + 5 hours of first aid lesson and  idiot test if u fell over3 times which is on ur own cost..

you,re better get yourself irish licence before coming over.

  5. Germany is known to have a pretty hard system for the driving license. First of all it costs a fortune and second of all it takes up a lot of time. So there are a lot of people that go to the UK as students for a year and some of them prefer to do their driving license there and then change it than to do it in Germany. I myself did mine in a holiday driving school, where I had a 7 days very intensive course with more than 2 hours driving every day and up to 2 hours of theoretical class room teaching per day. But there is a certain amount of lessons you have to attend and so I was finished after 10 days. Which is great, but it costs even more.

So I would definietly recommend that you do your license in Ireland. Also I'm not sure about this, but as far as I know, the new driving licenses at least the ones in Germany are EU licenses, so for example I am able to drive in Spain with my license. So you should be able to do the same.
