Question:

Quick outside sets...?

Alright, so I'm going to be playing varsity boys volleyball for my high school in the spring [as an outside hitter] and during our volleyball camp our varsity coach wants us to hit quick outside sets as opposed to higher outside sets that we used on JV. Any tips for getting the right timing down for these quicker outside sets?

Thanks

  1. take off when the ball leaves the setters hands.

usually you wait until the ball reaches its peak, but on a quick set, you generally take off when it leaves the setters hands.

    good luck!!

  2. I usually go when the setter has just set the ball. Speed up your approach (don't shorten it though) and it'll help a lot more. If its a shoot to the outside then you should be timing it more like a middle running a 3. Just practice it, it'll come to you.

  3. I agree with the above answers.  You have to practice with your setter.  Every setter has different styles of shoot sets.  Some have more lob than others.  You have to figure out how your setter is going to set the shoot.  For some setters that really SHOOT the ball outside you need to be on the ground ready to jump when the ball is in the setter's hand.  If the setter does more of a lob shoot, you should be doing your plant when the ball hits the setter's hands.

  4. hey i played setter in high school for our volleyball team.

best thing to do is to talk to your setter, he can help you pin point the timing. the best thing that worked for our hitters was as soon as the ball touched the setter's hands, the hitter started into his approach, then once the setter let go of the ball the hitter was almost in the air.

great communication with your setter can help you with the timing of the quick sets

  5. hey.

im a setter and the big thing that helps is to talk to your setter.

once the ball touches there finger tips you wanna start there,

but it also depends on the strength of your setter/setters. you wanna try to get as much time in with all of them so you know how there sets are.

    hope this helped :)

  6. i'm a setter and an outside hitter and i know what you mean because my other setter and i had very different styles. when you talk to them about the position and then once you have ran it through a few times you will get it down. goodluck
