Looking for an informed opinion

I have a house in So Cal – 100 plus temperatures.

Current renter has tried to run A/C all night and it stops

Apparently the evaporator ices up.

I’ve told him to stop till I find out what gives but he continues to use it at night.

I look under furnace and find wet floor.

On a 100 degree day with 75 degree air inside and 65 degree wet bulb, I measure 50 psig on the suction side of the compressor.

Is this evidence of low freon?

I don’t plan to add my own – don’t have epa 308 license – but would like to know what gives since I don’t particularly trust local AC guys – some of whom operate by feeling the pipes and others of whom want $50 per pound for R-22.

My concern is that if freon is too low may ice up evaporator with result that liquid goes back to compressor – which I understand can break the compressor– and also I understand that compressor may not get adequate lubrication; but if too high may harm the compressor in some other way.

  1. if the floor is wet you need to change your air filter and you will need a hvac tech to add freon to the system

  2. you are correct also clogged evap coil will also ice up clean both coils inside and out to get it right

  3. 50 psi will freeze up. with 100 degree ambiant air temp, you re probably around 85 psi.  feel free to email me if any questions

  4. The best "opinion" I can give ya, would be to take that wealth of information to the manufacture's web site.

    just an opinion.
