To become a nurse that takes care of the babies in the nursery do I need to be an RN? Is that all I have to go to school for? I understand that once I become an RN I will probably need to gain experience outside of a hospital in order to be hired due to liability. Is this called a prenatal nurse or a prenatal nurse tech or what? Please give me all the advice you can, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. You will go to school to become an RN. Then you apply to the area ( ob, med-surg, er) that you would like to work. Most places would like a year experience on Med-surg. Good Luck!

  2. Yes an RN or an LVN to work in a hospital setting. I think it depends on the state you live in to determine if you need to gain work experience before working in a hospital.

  3. To work with babies in a hospital nursery, you'd be called a Nursery Nurse, or, some hospitals do not have a designated Nursery Nurse because the babies are with the mothers most of the time, so they just have the regular Postpartum Nurse who takes care of both mom and baby.

You could work as a Nursing Assistant and try to get a job in the hospital OB unit first, but it's not necessary to have experience in that area.

Once you're an RN you can try to get into there upon graduation, but most will want you to have some general medical / surgical (hospital) for about 6 months to a year.
