Racking question?

I went to the grate southeren billiard tour in chatt tenn this weekend the tourment director ask that the two ball be racked at the tail of the rack what is the purpose of this I did not get a chance to ask there

Can I assume you are playing 9 ball?  One theory that quickly comes to mind is simply to ensure regualrity and consistancy among all the different games going on in the tounrament

My guess is that to only separate the 1 and the two.....the one normally goes back toward the breaking end and the 2 would stay on the opposite end.....I recall being told how to rack a 9 ball rack by certain numbers so that the next numbered ball would be on opposite ends making the run out a little harder....but really to many variables going on too really make this work....

Its actually done to make it easier to break and run racks.  The one ball gets potted in the side frequently and predictably if you know how to do it. The back ball tends to also have a predictable path. It will go the back rail and kick toward the corner pocket at the head of the table opposite of the side you break from.

If you ever watch a rack mechanic like Corey Deuel break he will consistantly make the one in the side, and if the two is the back ball, he will have an easy shot in the corner on the two ball.

Wish I could tell you but I don't know about that one.  A legal rack for 8ball consists of the 8 ball in the middle, and a solid and a stripe in the bottom corners.  And for 9 ball the 1 ball in front and the 9 in the middle.
