Radioactive Beta Emission?

How much energy is released when 14C, decays by β- emission?

I tried E=mc^2 of the mass of an electron to get the energy, but that didn't work. I'm really confused as to what to do, Thanks!

  1. Beta particles are merely electrons, they can be easily removed from a nucleus. Radioactivity is the result of fission, neutrons are released, if a chain reaction of emission is taking place you have a fission bomb. E=MC2 relates to nuclear fusion, there is no alpha particle radiation involved here.


  2. A beta particle is an electron. You can find the kinetic energy of the electron, 0.5mv squared, for the solution. Rest mass of an electron is 0.0005486 kg
