Take the Amtrak "Wolverine" from Detroit to Chicago. In Chicago, transfer to the "Lake Shore Limited" to Boston. MAKE SURE that you book the train to Boston, because the Lake Shore Limited also runs to New York. For the third leg, take the "Downeaster" from Boston, which runs to Portland. Amtrak has thruway bus connections to destinations elsewhere in Maine, which will leave from Portland.
