Question:

Random plant...?

Last summer my mom attempted to plant something in a large pot (not sure what, but it didn't grow!). Now the pot is full of weeds. Could I pull out the weeds and reuse the soil? Or is that a bad idea? My mom keeps telling me that it will be fine, but I am new to gardening and am not so sure. What do you think?

  1. It's best to empty the pot completely, scrub it with a scrub brush and some soapy water, let it dry and start over.

The soil that is in there now could contain some sort of disease organism ( since the original plant died ) or mold, fungus, seeds from the weeds that in there now, etc., etc., etc.

A clean start is ideal  :)

  2. It's ok to resue the soil. the seeds didn't spout, so they didn't absorbe the nutrients in the soil. You can reuse them to plant new plants.

  3. Yes you can re-use it, but be sure to fertilise it well.

  4. As long as you are using it outside it will be fine to pull all the weeds and plant what ever you like. Use a good fertilizer.

I do it all the time. In spring I reuse all my pots of soil, for annuals.
