Question:

Ratio Question! So confusing, help!?

When dealing with ratios, I know that in real life 1:2 is bigger than 1:5, but are you supposed to say that the ratio (now 1:5) has increased or decreased? I want to say increased because the discrepancy between the numbers has increased, but I'm thinking maybe it should be decreased because the fraction has become smaller. Help!

  1. I think that what you're talking about is two seperate questions

Yes, a ratio of 1:2 going to 1:5 is increasing as the discrpancy between the numbers has increased (just as you said)

And yes, when looking at them in fractional terms, it has decreased because the fraction has become smaller.

Although a ratio can be shown in the form of a fraction, a ratio is a ratio and a fraction is a fraction so they can have different meanings when comparing the two.

  2. 1:2 ratio is 0.5 and the ratio 1:5 is 0.2

  3. When solving for which ratio is bigger, use the cross multiplication method. (when dealing with ratios i like to convert them to fractions)

    1/2 and 1/5

    1(5)      1(2)

    5          2

1/2 has a value of 5, so the ratio 1:2 is bigger. (always do the cross multiplication. The bigger the denominator, the smaller the ratio)

  4. You have already answered your question. :) It really depends on what is being asked or how you want it viewed by others.

If what is being asked is the discrepancy, then you could say that the discrepancy has increased.

But if you're dealing with absolute terms and you're comparing 1:2 and 1:5 then definitely 1:5 is smaller than 1:2, so the ratio has decreased.

  5. Interesting question. I think that the ratio decreases.
