  1. I know that girl rats are more likely to get cancer. As for boys I never liked their gonads rubbing up against things when they walked around.

  2. um..........They both are bad lol

  3. I've had both, and I much prefer the boys. They do have a tendency to sort of pee a little wherever they walk (sort of like a constant drip) but they are so sweet and love to be held. I used to sleep with my rat sometimes - he would snuggle up to my neck like a cat. The girls tend to be more feisty and more likely to bite or scratch.

I'm pretty sure you can get a rat neutered, and that might help with the urine everywhere. I don't know from personal experience, though.

  4. When I first got my rats the breeder told me that bucks are more likely to be lap rats, does like exploring their surroundings but other than that there is no big difference.

My girls marked their territory all the time at first but stopped doing it after a while, the smell disappeared when it was dry and never stained.

  5. Personality-wise, there is no difference. As for smell, rats were the first small animal I've had experience with that there was no difference, either. The only difference is, male rats get a greasy, yellowish crud in their fur called "buck grease". It doesn't smell, it just looks & feels gross. But it cleans up fairly easily with Dawn dishwashing detergent.

There is a difference in personality, but the differences appeal to me, personally. Males are laid back & more cuddly; females are lively & adventurous. All in all, rats are fun pets. They just don't live long enough!
