Question:

Real "American" Beer?

What kinds of truly American beer are there nowadays?

Coors and Miller are owned by Canadian Molson, and Bud was recently sold to some brewing company in Belgium. Those are the "big 3" in American beers.... and not one is American.

What are some All-American beers?

I can think of about 10 off the top of my head, but I think most of them are provincial, so they're not available nationally.

  1. Yeah this question comes up a lot when I bartend.

Currently the largest owned American beer/brewery is Pabst Blue Ribbon.  They own PBR, Schlitz, Stag, Colt 45, Olympia, Milwaukee's Best.

Sam Adams of the Boston Brewing Company is currently in Second.  My fav is their Cherry Wheat.

I'm from MO so I recommend Boulevard and Schlafly when I work...Boulevard Wheat is one of my all-time favorite brews.

Lots of good beer left...but you are correct Coors is Canadian, Bud is Belgian, Miller is South African...

  2. Sam Adams, and Sierra Nevada are the two that come to mind.  I can't think of any others right now.  I didn't know Coors was owned by Molson.  I thought Coors was their own company.  ???  Where did you find that info?

  3. That dude knows jack about real beer.

Steam Beer is loved by all REAL beer drinkers.

Also most American beers use malted barley in the brewing ingredients bill.

    Anchor

    Sierra Nevada

    New Belgium

    Boston Beer Company

    others

  4. Don't forget Abita Springs (LA). Their Turbo Dog is awesome.

  5. Shells, Cold Spring, Leinenkugel

  6. There are literally HUNDREDS of craft breweries in this country.

Family owned and operated breweries with a sense of pride in the product they make.  No chemicals or adjuncts.  No foam enhancers or propylene glycol or God knows what else like the "big three".

Your best bet is to find a local beverage store that carries a large selection of beer and tell them what you like and they'll be able to steer you in the right direction.  Better yet find a bar with a great selection and just start working your way through the cooler!

  7. It's pretty sad isn't it? The first answer that references Schell's and Leinenkugels are both regional to Minnesota and Wisconsin but both are super breweries. Check out New Glarus Brewery's Spotted Cow.

    DeeLish!!!!

  8. Actually, Molson and Coors mergered into a new company, Molson Coors Brewing.  The company will be based in Chicago, so the Coors brand is still "American".

However, life is too short to drink such swill.  Really.  Treat yourself to a locally-brewed beer or one of hundreds of craft-brewed beers made right here in America.

  9. ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!!

I know that when I fly to Washington State from California, I would bow down to Mount Rainier. AS they used to have truely the best beer ever made.

Rainier Ice! I dont believe they make it anymore.

  10. Steam beer is frowned upon by true beer drinkers.  It is a lager brewed at ale temperatures.  During the gold rush of the 1850s, a company in San Francisco started up that made steam beer.  It is one of very few American beers that is made from all malt (others use filler grains because malt is costly to make).  They use steam beer brewing techniques because ice was available for only a few months out of the year, and had to be shipped down from the Sierras.  That company is still in business, and is available across the US.  It's Anchor steam beer.  I've tried it, and it's AWFUL.

  11. Oldest American Brewery............Yuengling'......and it's a good beer
