  1. They're obviously trying to rebuild which is something small market teams need to do much more often then big market teams.  They know that when their star players contracts expire they won't be able to pay them the type of money the big market teams can pay.  Because of that they trade these guys away to get something in return instead of just letting them walk during free agency.  Teams won't trade away their best players without getting some good prospects in return though, so I would expect that the Pirates made a solid move here.  They know they're out of it already this year with how strong the NL Central is, so they're starting their rebuilding now.

  2. Pitt. fans should be really happy with their team this year because they've finally admitted that they aren't in a position to compete. It's nice to hear in spring training when that notion is true for every other team, but one look at their rotation pretty much says all you need to know. That being said, the Pirates parted with Nady, Bay, and Marte while they were at their peaks. That's a good move. In return, they got premium prospects who are going to help sooner rather than later. I've got to tell you, I really want to see the Bucs compete again some day, and if they follow these recent trades up with a couple years of serious dedication to player development, it should happen.

  3. no offence i no my team the twins arent good but the pirates SUCK!!!!!!

  4. im a stros fan and i thought the pirates were on the bad end of their deals. xavier nady gone and jason bay gone just ruins their lineup and their chance at the playoffs. losing these guys is tough for pittsburgh but thats what the gamble of trades is about

  5. Your 1st question:

If they can sell this bill of goods time and again and Pirates fans believe them then good for them.

As a baseball fan I have heard them constantly commit to a rebuilding plan since the late 1990s.  They altered their logo and uniforms in late 90s but for some reason that didn't work.  They keep promising 4 or 5 years till a contender.  "You know that saying about those that promise to do something tomorrow.  Tomorrow never comes because just about the time it arrives, its today again and you have to wait another 24 hours for tomorrow."  This seems to be the Pirates strategy for winning in the future.
