Recommend Days Out In North England?

We are trying to plan a day out for 6 adults for somewhere in the north of England. We would like it cheap and cheerful and are happy to stay over somewhere, so maybe recommend a 2 day thing? Activities, entertainment, etc. Any ideas anyone?
