Recycling question.....?

I have often wondered, when you don't recycle at home and you just throw your trash away all together and let the garbage man pick it up, it goes to a dump or a landfill, correct? My question is....do these places recycle? Do they sort your trash and recycle what they can? Or does it all just go in a big hole in the ground? I know it use to be that way, but is it still?

  1. My trash company sorts the garbage as they collect recyclables and sell them for a profit.

  2. Every dump is different. My dump does not sort any trash, that is why the city has a recycling program. If you don't recycle it- it wont get recycled.

As a consumer, I believe we need to know where things come from and where things go. We need to continually educate ourselves. All dumps give tours and have educators. Get a group together in your area and have them come and tell you what happens at the dump. You can find this by contacting your local waist department.

  3. depends on area...my county has transfer stations...we have bins for newspaper,,,plastic bottles,,,and for metal, and one for wood/furniture,,and used motor oil....and a compacter for the rest...the giant green boxes are trucked 20 miles to a land fill...capped on bottom and top...we used to recycle glass but it cost more to collect and sort than they got selling it...
