Question:

Reducing Swollen Feet, post pregnancy?

by  |  earlier

I had my daughter via C-Section one week ago. I also had my tubes tied at the same time. The doctor told me that my feet might stay swollen a little longer because of the extra IV fluids that I had to have. But my feet are so swollen that I am unable to get any of my sandles on. I have to wear my husband's sandles and they barely fit.

My feet are so tender and sore right now, it is hard to walk. I am afraid that if they get any bigger, they might break open.

Any suggestions on how I might be able to reduce the swelling? I am not supposed to go to the doctor for another two weeks.

  1. i had the same problem. be patient, the swelling  comeS down slowly after childbirth. get plenty of rest and elevate your legs.

  2. Eat no salt, drink a lot of water, keep your feet elevated, and tell that husband of yours to rub your feet!

  3. I also had a c-section and had lots of swelling.  Before I left the hospital the doc gave me an order for fluid pills which helped really helped with the swelling.

  4. Yourr doctor said you would swell "a little" ...it sounds like you're swelling "a lot."  I would call your doctor and let her know that you've got a lot of swelling.  They may be able to give you a pill to help get rid of the excess fluids.  If you can't actually get in to see your doctor, leave a message with the receptionist that you would like a call back as soon as possible.

Avoid any salty foods, keep your feet up when you can, and make sure you get a little circulation going during the day.

  5. That exact thing happened to me, I had the c-section,then i had emergency surgery 4 days after the c-section. My Gall Bladder almost exploded. They pumped me with so many fluids when i came home my feet would not go down for anything. It felt like if i stuck a pin in them they would explode. Well i called my OB/GYN and told them they were getting bigger and no relief. I went in the next day and they almost put me in the hospital becuse my blood pressure was so high from all the water retention and even though i had given birth you can still get pre-eclamsia because it was so soon after birth, like you i swelled up like that. The doctor only let me come home because the next day was thanksgiving. He gave me water pills and i had 24 hr bed rest with my feet elevated above my heart. The next morning even though it was thanksgiving, I had to go to emergency for them to check my blood pressure and see if that swelling went down at all. It did go down some and my pressure was down some but i still had to go home and put them back on pillows above my heart. My family had to take care of the baby,so i hope you have someone to help you,if it is as bad as mine . starting tonight,,get those legs propped up on pillows above your heart. Call the Doctor and get in there asap so they can check your pressure and make sure you are ok. Ask for water pills but they are not the cure all. you need them elevated. If you have noticed no difference in your legs since you came home, as far as them going down, get to the doctor. When i called they said it was natural too!! But i insisted because i knew they were not right. If they feel like they are gonna bust when you walk and they hurt terribly call that doc and get in there. I was in such pain in my feet , i could barely walk they were so big. I'm not trying to scare you but you know your body. You know swelling and then there is Elephant feet. I went to the Doc in socks, nobody's shoes would fit me and it was to painful to try. GOOD LUCK!! Let me know what happened. Hopefully if you keep them up above your heart for about 12 hours and you notice a difference maybe you are ok, but i would call for those water pills.

  6.   When I had a broken ankle I had to elevate my feet.  The feet have to be higher than the knee, and the knee has to be higher than the hip.  The swelling didn't go down for me until I put a 2 x 4 under the foot of the bed, this way my feet were elevated all night.  The swelling went down in 3 days.  The fluids have to drain to your hips, I hope it works for you too.

  7. drink as much water as possible.

and if you cant walk at least try moving your feet/legs so that you can get the blood flowing faster.

    talk to your doctor.

if you cant talk to them, tell them you want the doctor on-call.

    hope this helps!
