Question:

Reference letter request question?

by  |  earlier

So one former boss had told me two months ago that I can come to her for a reference. I also had another boss last year that told me that she would be able to provide reference letters if i need them.

so in my reference letter request to them, should I be assuming that the offers still stand? How should I phrase the reference letter requests? Usually i phrase them "I was wondering if you would be comfortable with being listed as a reference in my job applications" etc. However, i also feel that it sounds presumptuous of me to say "I wanted to let you know I'm applying to Company X and have listed you as a reference". Is there a good way to phrase a request letter in my situation?

  1. na, if they are still employed at the company and were your supervisor/boss and had said they would give you a reference then it stands as long as not too many years go by that they don't remember you.  I've used some work references for years until the people retired or moved on to new jobs and I lost track of them.

  2. Your best bet would be to remind each boss that you were offered a letter of reference, and simply tell her or him that you would like to have a generic reference letter.  That way you can make copies and supply them with your resumes...

  3. Hi Elsie:

When such offers come at the time I generally suggest that people ask that the letter be written right away and it can be addressed to :  To Whom it May Concern . . . Then you've got it in you possessiona and can use it anytime you apply for work and it is an appropriate thing to inform your reference people that you've used their name in reference to an application.

At this time and you are asking for a letter.  Just ask out right.  No need to be passive about it.  Just inform this kind people that you are applying for a particular job and you'd appreciate them writing a reference letter to your future potential employer.

All the best in your job search
